My Classroom
I spent the last three years as a first grade teacher. In the summer of 2015 I was trained with Conscious Discipline and implemented it into the 2015-2016 school year.
Life is full of adventures and small moments that every student deserves to experience which is why field trips are such an important part of our school family.
Playworks is a non-profit program my classroom has been lucky enough to be a part of. It teaches students to play and work together as a team.
When teaching 5th grade I brought the Girls on the Run program to my school. I was able to bring girls from my classroom onto the team. I also brought it to my current school as well. It is an amazing program that provides girls lessons on being the best they can be while training for a 5k!
Reading is a huge part of my classroom environment. Every year we participate in March is Reading Month by competing against other classrooms. In this picture students were rewarding for their reading effort by a surprise visit from PAWS, the Detroit Tigers mascot!
Writer's Workshop is another huge part of our daily routine. It is a chance to grow independent writer's...no matter what they write about.
Below is a little look at the programs and activities I do in my classroom. I have had a wonderful and diverse group of first grades in my classrooms over the years at Roose Elementary in Centerline, Michigan. Click on the pictures to view a slide show and learn a little more about what we do!

Student Projects
Having strong reading strategies is important in the goal of creating independent readers. Here students created a readers toolbox to display the different strategies they learned and use during Reader’s Workshop!
Life Cycles! During a unit of study for life cycles students were lucky enough to have a presenter come in to discuss the butterfly life cycle. Afterwards they had to use what they know to recreate the life cycle out of different materials.
Interactive read aloud time is a big part of my classroom. This time gives them the chance to interact with me as I read a book with them. For the book Stella Nona students had to respond to the text by creating a poster describing the main characters feelings.
During this science unit first graders learned about how we got the four seasons in Michigan. After learning they were asked to take their knowledge outside and recreate the reasons for the seasons.
